Gutian Mountains
Gutianshan National Nature Reserve
The Gutianshan National Nature Reserve (NNR) is located in the western part of Zhejiang Province of China. The climate at Gutianshan NNRis warm-temperate with a short dry season in November and December and with warm summers. Most of the stands are secondary forests.
In total, 27 Comparative Study Plots (CSPs) were established between May and July 2008 to address the impact of successional age on ecosystem functioning, providing a basis for assessing the successional processes at work across tree species diversity in the BEF-China Main Experiment. Five successional stages were distinguished according to the age of the largest tree individuals in a plot. The number of plots per successional stage were 5 (<20 yr), 4 (<40 yr), 5 (<60 yr), 6 (<80 yr), and 7 (≥80 yr).
Latitude/Longitude: 29°8′18″–29°17′29″N, 118°2′14″–118°11′12″E
Project leads: Pengfei Guo, Xiangcheng Mi, Douglas Chesters, Michael Orr, Chao-Dong Zhu; Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Status of project: At planning stage for 2019-2020 collections
16 complete plots planned at paired (by elevation, etc.) sites of short (<20 yrs) and longer term (<80 yrs) succession, to be sampled for 1-2 months.
